VCHS Bass Fishing Team places first at state tournament

Houma, LA, May 10, 2019 – The 2019 Vandebilt Catholic High School Bass Fishing Team took first place at the Louisiana BASS Nation High School State Championship on May 5, 2019, launching out of Amelia, Louisiana. The team participated in 3 regional tournaments throughout the school year. Each tournament draws between 150 to 170 teams with the top 10 percent of each tournament qualifying for the state championship tournament. This year 83 teams qualified for the state championship tournament. Vandebilt Catholic’s team was comprised of 26 students, making up a total of 13 teams. Four of the Vandebilt Catholic teams qualified to fish in the State Championship Tournament and all placed within the top 20.
The team championship title is determined by a combine weight of all fish caught, which won Vandebilt Catholic the first place team finish. Big BASS honors for the tournament was won by 8th graders, Tanner Loney and Ryan Welch. Ryan Welch landed a 4.76 lb. bass with the help of his teammate. Sophomores, Michael Clement and Josh Bergeron finished 3rd overall and qualified to fish in the National Championship being held in Tennessee later this year. Sophomores, Nick Tamberella and Braxton Brien finished 5th with Ryan Welch and Tanner Loney placing 12th and 9th grader, Thomas Thompson and sophomore, Brady Drury finishing 20th.
